29. January 2024 (Sist bully)

Having a doll with a faceplate system means I can do many faceups in a row, which makes me incredibly excited! I thought it would also be fun to record this as a project journal.

My plan is to try out a few things I haven't done before and make the faceplates quite different from each other while still obviously belonging to the same character. The skintone is tan(ish) but not all the resin bits are so I'll also have to figure out how to get them all into the same tone at some point.

I figured I'd start with the easiest - the unoa bully faceplate. There is no need to worry about symmetry and it's already tan so it's quite straightforward how to go from there.

Today's victim.

I loved how Michi's port wine birthmark worked out so I was eager to try out painting something kind of opposite - instead of a stain, creating the lack of pigment in vitiligo. I used gouache with acrylic thinner - acrylic paint would have probably given me a more even surface which would have been a smarter choice. I, however, am lazy rather than smart and I hadn't taken the acrylics out of storage so it is what it is and fingers crossed it evens out in the process.

Brows and lashes are my number one faceup enemy so I got the little hairs out of the way asap in case I mess up and need to wipe everything.

Hiding my mistakes and rescuing the brow shape with pastel.

The fun part starts (blushing)

More pastel!

More :chibi

More blushing, freckles, teeth!

Glossing the glossy bits, filling the nosetrils with glue for the piercing, leaving to dry overnight. Not sure if gluing lashes in will be something the future holds for this one as I'd like to keep this faceplate rather natural but we'll see. Maybe if I find brown faux lashes!

Plate 1 complete! Success!

Next up: tan decadent Lusis

29. January 2024 (Decadent Lusis)

As much as I wanted to have a tan Sist through and through, some of the tan faceplates were sold out so I opted for a decadent Lusis instead. In the end, I'm not chasing a 100% perfect face match and want different moods and stylings out of the faceplates so it works for me. For this plate, I wanted a more dramatic and less casual look.

I started by copying the shape of the pigmentless bits off the other faceplate.

While I do like a dramatic dark brow, I also couldn't not use the chance to have a bleached brow look on a darker skintone.

A few layers of blushing in. I was very impatient with the acrylic drying times and paid the price of the pastel sticking to some spots weird.

Some freckles to pull it together more with the bully plate.

I went for an alternative makeup look and also added some more bright red accents.

annnnd gloss

I figured this look could pull a pair of upper eyelashes off better so I glued them in. Unfortunately, I went in with a little bit of an unsteady hand and got glue all over the lower eyelids, creating tears upon drying. I'm fine with that development, though, it's fitting.

I was a bit unsure about this faceplate at the start but I'm digging the alt look and am thinking of painting more bleached brows for what's next.

Next up: fairy skin Sist default that needs to become tan :shudder

30. January 2024 (Sist default)

I was super impatient so the first tanning salon session went a bit wrong :sweat

Starting off with sist default in fairy skin. The tanned faceplates were sold out but I really wanted the face so... I got myself in a bit of a pickle.

>

I mixed something that looked close enough in my mind with my dim desk lamp and dabbed it on. And it was fine until the white resin was still shining through!

Some doubt started to settle in but unfortunately I was in the mood to wing it so I kept convincing myself it was fine.

Maybe if I paint the depigmentation on it works, right? RIGHT?

it... does not. Wiped it off, trying again with a little more research into the colour.

While paradise skin looks tan in comparison to the usual doll colours, it is just a darker beige when looking at it isolated from the context. I downloaded a colour analyser app to get some better colour samples and hope this helps me mix something more accurate.

30. January 2024 (session 2)

Things have been going uphill in the tan salon.

I tried it inside of one of the tan faceplates and it's very close so yay!

Did not take into account that fairy skin underneath makes it seem super yellow though?! :shudder

Getting it even has really been a chore today... I have been going in with a magic eraser and at time also sandpaper to tone the concealer-on-an-orange-peel down a little.

Yikes, it's drying darker. I'll let it dry completely and see if sealant and light-coloured pastel will tone the trump tan down a little. It is in the correct ballpark at least so I am not super eager to wipe again but we'll see. I think I might want to look into some very extra makeup on top *_*

31. January 2024

I think she has a bit of a sunburn :sweat

A few layers of sealant and white pastel later, we have a bit of a closer match.

Bleached brows, my new favourite schtick

My phone tends to oversharpen things but that's maybe also a good look into how the texture works. Also, blushing is starting to bring it into life so it's a bit of a relief.

Having used white on the previous faces, I wanted to switch it up a little so I did some baby blue line work instead.

Switching up the piercings, too.

This is how the other faceplates and body look next to it. It's a little sunburnt next to the others resins but I think I have dolls that match worse :sweat

I felt something was missing so I went to brighten the lips up with red...
*narrator's voice* mistakes were made
... but I didn't really like it and wish I had kept the natural lip T_T

... so I went for purple instead, which kind of works better with the whole face. And it looks fine all in all I think! Unfortunately I'm not so sure if it's a style that works for what I want so I might do another wiperoo later and plan the faceup differently. AH, PROBLEMS. I also need to get some more pairs of fitting eyes, it'd be nice to have a pair for each faceplate so I don't need to gouge them out all the time.

Next up: I might try to paint a pair of NS hands to tan???

31. January 2024 (hands)

Okay, fist hands: DIY til I die, I will not buy extra hands in the right colour before I try to modify the ones I already have. I also like the shape of the unoa fists more than what huajing, that the body is from, is offering so I'd be really glad if it worked out!

Given that the hands already have a yellow undertone and that paint ended up too dark, I went for a new approach aka blushing to match.

ha-haa! matches the face!!!

Could it be it's a little dark for the body tho? :|

Painting on some texture so the unevenness doesn't look like dirt.

Did I mess up one for the palms? I messed up one of the palms and am going in with a dust-under-the-rug fix.

Haha they're surely much lighter than the painted face? Right. I'mma wipe that face. Blushing to match is my new best friend.

Cute manicure? Check

She'll fight you!

Only in long sleeves though T_T

Verdict: always try blushing before painting and save time+sealant.

I think I might remove this at some point and go in with a more desaturated colour. I am extremely happy that colour changes like this can work out without dye and airbrushing, though! I think I learned a new skill today?:blush

Next up: back to faceplates, wiping and doing the sist default one again.

1. February 2024

Today's episode is a guest episode.

After a few mockups to figure out how to redo the Sist default, I figured I'm not coming up with much new for Vick - and what's the point of having 2 faceplates with the same faceup if one will only find very little use in the case? Now, I have another Unoa hybrid that has been a bit of a placeholder doll while Vickie's body arrived. I got a cheap Sist sleeping plate of Mandarake that I planned on painting for V as well but it fit on a body I already had and kind of became a separate doll :sweat So, to balance things out, I went ahead to paint an open-eyed version of Asa instead! (I need to get new eyes now dammit :|)

The plan (for once in my life I have one!) - I found an unopened tube of sage green gouache the other day and though it would make nice eye makeup to pair with the more subdued sleeping faceplate.

With my new-found skill of blushing to match went ahead to yellow the stark white fairy skin.

Much quicker than with tan, I got close!

I started adding pink blushing and lightly placing the eyebrows and lashes. I know they are a controversial topic but I love the moulded eyebrows AL faces have! No worries with symmetry!

I'm getting a little better with sparser, thin lashes - definitely a development as well.

I feel like I went a little overboard with the freckles but it is what it is.

Hello! I'm thinking of brown eyes later on, but this is the vacant pair I have that has to go everywhere for the moment.

Oh no she looks so startled! Might have to do with the fist hands on her left :sweat

I'm now out of faces to paint! I might get more at some point in time but I'm out of ideas for the moment and happy with the options I have right now.

Things I learned:
- I don't have the most pigmented pastels but they absolutely get the work done for generating a whole new skintone!
- Transparent school glue is way too runny to properly glue in eyelashes - my mind has been blown with white tacky glue.
- I should aim for lighter rather than darker when covering the whole body part in paint & it might be that pastels are enough for the work anyway.

Thank you for tuning into my hyperfocus faceup marathon! Painting many faces in a row like this has been great practice and very a satisfying view of progress - I feel like my brushstrokes are so much steadier now than they were before! I'm almost annoyed that whatever I paint next will be better
